Well here it is. The email I did not want to send. I am the Grand Sheik who stops Sons of the Desert attending a Convention.
Things are moving quickly on a day to day basis with Covid-19. I had hoped we could carry on with the Convention for 2020, however I really didn’t see how we could. Didn’t stop us having a successful “working lunch” in the Tontine last week in what turned out to be our last hurrah. As you know Grand Sheiks do not have any authority whatsoever, so bearing that in mind I took the democratic decision to cancel the Convention for 2020. With everything going on, it would have been irresponsible to carry on.
Now for the good news and the bad news. The good news is the Convention has been re-arranged for next year from Friday 7 May to Monday 10 May. The bad news is this is not the Bank Holiday weekend. They already had a booking for the Saturday, however the Government changed the date for the May Bank Holiday this year, so it is not without precedent. The other good news is once more we will have the whole of the Tontine Hotel to ourselves and we aim to run the Convention on the same itinerary as we would have had this year, subject to availability. We will still have the additional rooms in the Premier Inn and the hotel allocation will remain the same. I did consider the possibility of having the Convention later this year, however there is always the chance in 6 months I would be sending another email along these lines and it wouldn’t give folk much time to save up for the following Convention.
I know it is over a year away, and I know already people may have other engagements that weekend. If that is the case, you will be entitled to a refund, however I’m afraid there would be a deduction of £15 for costs already incurred and paid.
I would like to thank Nick Bowler and Steve Brooks who have graciously moved their Convention to the following year.
That’s all there is. There isn’t any more.
