Irv Hyatt RIP

RIP to my great Sons of the Desert buddy, Irv Hyatt . A wealth of knowledge with great stories about Jimmy Murphy and the Hollywood Victory Caravan. Condolences to his family. He will be sorely missed in San Diego next year.

Irv Hyatt passed away on Monday, April 14, 2025 at Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack. He was 72 years old.
Born in Newark on March 3, 1953 to the late Susan and Irving Hyatt, he was a lifelong resident of Woodbridge. Mr. Hyatt was a graduate of Woodbridge High School, Class of 1971; and employed as Human Resource Manager with Sym’s Clothing prior to his retirement.
As an entertainment archeologist/author he was known for his work on Laurel & Hardy: “Their Lives and Magic” (2011), authored over 30 books about film and was creator of the documentary “Hollywood Victory Caravan – A Star Spangled Story” (2018).
He was a member of the Sons of the Desert, the Laurel and Hardy Appreciation Society as well as the Rahway Retired Men’s Club; and served on the boards of the Union County Performing Arts Center of New Jersey and the Historical Association of Woodbridge Township.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Robert Hyatt, on April 6th; sisters in law, Jeanette Hauser and Judy Lavin; and brother in law, George Hauser.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 50 years, Mary E. Lavin Hyatt; brothers and sisters in law, Teresa Hyatt, of Aberdeen, WA, Anita and Duane Cox of Hampton, VA, Joe and Terry Lavin of Howell, Theresa and Matthew Norton of Monroe Township, Greg Lavin of Phillipsburg and James and Sarah Lavin of Roselle; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A Funeral service will take place on Friday, April 18, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at Costello-Greiner Funeral Home, 44 Green Street, Woodbridge. Cremation will be private. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, April 17, 2025 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers contributions to the Woodbridge History Museum, 86 Green Street, Woodbridge, NJ 07095 Mr. Hyatt’s memory would be greatly appreciated.
