More on Harry

We remember Harry Hoppe at the Blockheads Tent’s South Queensferry convention warning us that U-boats were coming up the river Forth! Martin warned him to be careful and keep his head down as we were near the airport. Rest in peace.

I am completely devastated by the terrible news about the demise of Harry. I have known him since the early days of the Two Tars Tent in Germany. I was always delighted to see him at conventions, though we somehow managed to miss each other in the last couple of years. So he has found the ultimate way of avoiding to meet me in Norwich this year. This is more than I can stand...

Harry had much to be proud of, though he was, of course, a modest man. He was the founding Grand Sheik of the That’s My Wife Tent and in that capacity he hosted a remarkable European Convention in Düsseldorf. He had an enormous and unique collection of Laurel and Hardy items and in each issue of The Perry Winkle magazine he was in the habit of sharing some of his prized possessions with readers, always with a touch of his characteristic humour. He was also the author of several books and tent magazines.

Above all he was a most likeable fellow. We have lost a great friend.

Harry’s keen sense of humour shone brightly when he appeared with red helmets at a visit to the Dad’s Army Museum during a Saps at Sea Tent convention.
