Historic Environment Scotland recently designated Cathcart Cemetery as a site of architectural, historical and cultural significance. It stands as an excellent example of a late Victorian garden cemetery.

The cemetery is characterised by having a thoughtfully planned landscape layout and a prominent Scots Baronial style gatehouse which demonstrate the artistic and social values of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Situated beside Linn Park and overlooking the White Cart Water, the cemetery continues to serve as a valued public green space.

This listing will help ensure that Cathcart Cemetery is managed and preserved with the care it merits, securing its legacy for future generations.

The site is significant as a largely intact 19th century garden cemetery and is a good example of the work of cemetery designer, William Ross McKelvie, who achieved renown for the quality of his designs following the initial wave of garden cemetery construction in Scotland.

In 2022 Historic Environment Scotland approved plans for a bronze plaque to be sited in Rutherglen to celebrate Stan Laurel’s short stay in Scotland.

The plaque was erected on 27th July 2022 at 57 Buchanan Drive.
